Personal Training Saskatoon at Fitness Focus

Hard work, perseverance, motivation and determination have fueled my passions throughout my entire life. From a very early age, I discovered an athletic ability within myself and excelled at many sports including volleyball, basketball, swimming, track and hockey. After high school however, the demands of post secondary education forced me to lose focus on sports and fitness and I came face to face with the reality of not only being uncomfortably overweight and out of shape, but also dealing with an unhealthy relationship with food. Realizing I allowed myself to lose sight of something that I was so passionate about for so long, lead me to embark on a journey that I haven’t looked back on in over ten years and ultimately lead me to a career in the fitness industry. Having been through my own experience battling weight issues and emotional eating, I know what it takes to get desired results. My goal as a personal trainer is to motivate inspire and educate others about the benefits of exercising and living a healthy lifestyle. Results do not come over night, but with patience, persistence, and consistency anyone can achieve realistic goals. I am so excited to be working with Team Wawryk and I can’t wait to get you started on the right track to reach your goals.

Hey Saskatoon, It's Telemiracle Time!

posted by Fitness Focus    |   January 24, 2017 19:17

Saskatoon, it's once again time for Telemiracle. We're calling on all gym members, friends and staff to pitch in and buy a helping hand in support of Telemiracle 41 on March 4th & 5th.  You can make your minimum $2 contribution to any of the front staff by cash or at point of sale.

Thanks to your donations to Telemiracle, the Kinsmen Foundation has the opportunity to improve the quality of life and the independence of hundreds of people every year. Saskatchewan residents are able to access special needs equipment and medical assistance that wouldn’t otherwise be attainable.

Helping Individuals

Innovations like ceiling track systems, portable lifts and ramps, funded by the Kinsmen Foundation, are making it possible for people to live at home and still receive the care they need. And with equipment like specialized wheelchairs, electric scooters, vehicle conversions and communications devices, people are achieving a level of independence they didn’t think possible.

When people can’t access the level of care they need at home, they must often travel to health care facilities in other parts of the province or country. And while the medical procedures are covered by health care, the patients and their families must pay for their own travel, meals and accommodations. By easing the financial strain,

Through the chaos of work, raising 4 kids, coaching hockey, moving and the failing health of his father, Vince never put the dumbbells down. He entered his first bodybuilding contest in 1991. Over the past 20 years, Vince has dedicated his life to the sport. He works hard, researches information constantly, studies nutrition, he eats, eats, and eats some more. Vince is constantly tweaking his diets different training methods to be the best that he can be. His motto has always been..."compete against yourself" he tells clients "don't worry about somebody else on stage, and work towards doing better than you did the time before. If you can do that, you will learn, grow and ultimately achieve your goal." That's what Vince did; and that is how he became the 2007 Canadian National Champion of Body Building.

My fitness journey started simply from one word, Competition. I was just a young boy from Cape Breton, NS with a brother 7 years older than me who was not only my role model, but a guy the fed a fire that still is burning today.

I began lifting weights at the age of 13 in a small Olympic Powerlifting gym that was set up in a garage for $20 a month. Over the next year I developed my body, learning proper form and gaining strength which helped me excel in Basketball; that’s when I fell in love with fitness.

After High School and numerous injuries, I realized I was not getting anywhere with sports. But, still having the competitive fire and burning desire to compete I became interested in Bodybuilding. A few friends were competing at the SABBA Provincials in 2012 and I began to follow their “cookie cut” diet without anyone knowing, so with the thought of maybe competing I pushed myself harder in the gym. After a year of building my body and dieting myself, I entered the 2013 SABBA Novice show in the newly created Men’s Physique category. I placed 4th which did not stand well with me.

Realizing experience is what I needed to get to the next level I decided to contact Vince with Team Wawyrk and worked alongside them ever since. Gaining incredible amounts of knowledge and developing my physique from a 4th overall SABBA Novice finish to a top 4 overall CANADIAN National finish in little under 2 years.

Since then I have become a MAGNUM Nutraceutical Sponsored athlete, started prepping for future shows, such as the Arnold Classic Invitational and CBBF 2016 Nationals; also coaching clients towards their own fitness goals, from weight loss, strength building, fitness contests, and more.

To me, fitness is not about flexing, taking selfies and being better than the guy next to me. It’s about a passion, shared with numerous individuals, with many different goals, dreams and definitions of what fitness means to them but, at the same time trying to be the best they can be!

I’ve made many lifelong friends, been places I never thought I could be and developed connections that will help me in my own fitness journey.

This isn’t a part time job. It’s my health, it’s fun, it’s a community and most importantly… It’s a lifestyle!

New Equipment for the Gym in 2015

posted by Fitness Focus    |   February 26, 2015 18:32

Members' workout requirements are always changing, which means we need to add new equipment to the gym. A must-have was a third Squat Rack, the Atlantis Half Rack. More people are starting to incorporate functional (and fundamental) exercises like deadlifts, lunges and squats into their training which necessitated us to add another Squat Rack into the weight room. In the past people would stay clear of exercises like squats because were under the impression they were only beneficial in a competition setting with the sole purpose of lifting a maximum amount of weight.  Now people are starting to realize that squats are the perfect exercise for both shaping the legs and glutes while complimenting a variety of other body parts. It's great to see people are now challenging themselves with these types of exercises.

The leg platform is a very diverse piece of equipment.  It looks very simple as it's just an adjustable step; but it would take more than your 2 hands to count the amount of exercises you can do with it. Step ups, lunges, reverse lunges, box jumps, box squats, stiff-leg deadlifts, incline push-ups, and the list goes on.  Get creative with the leg platform, it's durable and build for a serious workout.

Most machines work front-to-back. The Helix turns tradition on its side— literally. With lateral (or side-to-side) movement, you use more muscles, which means you burn more fat than during a traditional workout– in the same amount of time.  Plus Helix’s patented motion tones your butt, core and inner/outer thighs better than old-fashioned cardio machines.

PERSONAL TRAINING IN SASKATOON WITH TEAM WAWRYK PRO TRAINERS

posted by Fitness Focus    |   October 2, 2014 14:55

Ever thought about getting a trainer to because you are a bit lost in the gym?  Or maybe you've changed your fitness goals and need a bit of direction. Whatever the case, here are some great fundamental reasons that a personal training might be right for you.

1. A Trainer Provides Expertise through Experience

A good trainer will watch you during your exercises to make sure that you are doing the exercises correct; but an experienced personal trainer can give you great tips and add subtle changes to your workout that make a big difference to your results. For example, when targeting a specific muscle, a simple twist of the wrist at the top of certain exercises can develop that muscle in ways it otherwise wouldn’t.

2. A Trainer Provides Accountability

There are other ways to get accountability, like a training partner or a spouse who keeps on you to get to the gym; but a good personal trainer knows that they succeed when you succeed. They have built a program specifically for you, so your victory also becomes their victory; they want to see you succeed.  Whether you have one-on-one sessions with them or do monthly follow-ups, since no one likes failing you want to show them you've made progress.

3. A Trainer Gives You Direction

Goal setting is the key to the success of any journey, and sometimes we become conflicted about just where it is we want to go with our personal health and fitness journey. A person may have the urge to get stronger but not necessarily bigger, or increase their endurance but don’t want to sacrifice any muscle. We don’t always know how to start identifying attainable goals, especially when it comes to subject as complicated and diverse as health and fitness. A good personal trainer can help you identify you significant strengths and weaknesses, then help you set attainable goals and objectives that will lead to your eventual success.

4. A Trainer Increases Your Intensity

Having a personal trainer will empower you to raise the intensity of your workout, this equates to better results.  A training partner can increase your intensity too, because you’re both there for mutual benefit but it’s the job of the personal trainer to be there, keep your cadence and tempo right where it needs to be.

Common Misconceptions About Working Out

posted by Fitness Focus    |   July 16, 2014 19:06

Common Misconceptions about the weight room

So many people that are both new to the weight room or long time users become deterred from the gym because they haven’t achieved the results they had expected from their weight routine.  There are many common misconceptions about lifting weights that cause people to start on the wrong track and are then left feeling discouraged.

Lifting weights will make you big and bulky; false.  The primary benefit of lifting weights is increased lean muscles, but increased lean muscles doesn’t mean enormous muscles.  For men it is a lot easier to get big muscles, but still takes years of heavy training.  In the case of women, they just are not genetically programmed to build thick and bulky muscles.  Other benefits of weight lifting include increasing metabolism and lower body fat, a greater resistance to injury and improved overall health.  So don’t ignore the weight room, embrace weight training and use it to build the body you want.

Fitness Focus Saskatoon Fitness Saskatoon GymDoing Ab exercises everyday will result in a flat stomach and well-defined 6-pack Abs; false.  Abdominal (Ab) exercises are resistance training and like weight training, are used to develop the targeted muscles.  We need to remember that muscles and body fat are two completely different things, so once we develop our Abdominal muscles it does not change the fact that there still might be some fat lying on top of them.  Spending a majority of a workout everyday training Abs will become very repetitive and boring; dedicating some time twice a week Ab exercises is lots.

It is possible to spot reduce fat from one area of the body; false.  Repeating an exercise over and over will do nothing more than condition that particular muscles to perform that exercise.  To reduce body fat, we need to adjust what we eat so that the calories we ingest are slightly lower than the calories we burn, signalling the body to start burning fat for energy.  On the extreme end of this, when we begin to starve ourselves our body goes into survival mode and will begin to store fat in the body for future requirements.  We have no control over what area the body fat will accumulate; it is all genetically predetermined.  For some people it is in the stomach, for others it’s the hips or butt.  Just as we have no control over where it will end up, we have no control over where it will come off.

The key to success in health and fitness is the understanding that it takes patience in the process and the willingness to always learn, to change old habits and adapt.

Does Your Workplace Offer Fitness and Health Incentives?

posted by Fitness Focus    |   August 14, 2013 16:05

The bottom line of a Workplace Wellness Program is to promote healthier employees.  Healthy employees can be an employer's best asset as they tend to be happier and more productive in the workplace. These programs are becoming more widespread throughout Canada and the U.S. and range from simply offering information and fitness education to workers, to subsidized healthy lunches.  Many even go as far to provide an onsite company gym or subsidize the employees gym membership at a local facility. Here is why a workplace wellness programs should matter to you:

The benefits for employers result from the welfare of their employees. Healthy employees provide the company with a strategic edge, and by investing money in a program that will bring them lowered expenses in return keeps them ahead of the competition.  Employers can expect to see its workers performing more efficiently, with lower absenteeism and lower health care costs.  Other indirect benefits for a company providing these programs include job satisfaction, as well as raising retention rates and incentives for hiring. The welfare of employees has a direct impact on the success of the company.

Workplace wellness programs can help you get healthier, even if that simply means learning how to reduce stress and muscle strain when you are on the job. Depending on what your company offers, it might also help to lose weight, lower your cholesterol and blood pressure, sleep better, and save money on prescriptions. You may even find your life taking a new direction, such as the desire to become more involved in recreational sports teams or other forms of competition like marathons or bodybuilding competitions.  Sometimes, all you need is a little motivation to get the ball rolling and a workplace wellness plan might be it.

Another great benefit of wellness programs is a built sense of camaraderie with your co-workers. You’ll have a chance to experience activities with them that aren’t related to work, whether in a walking club or sports team, by having lunch together, or by going to the gym. Social support is a very important part of weight loss and getting fit. By interacting with co-workers, you’ll have others to give you encouragement when you need it, as well as to hold you accountable to your goals. Plus, you’ll be motivated by seeing other’s positive results. By using a wellness program, you’ll be an important part of the team.

If you work for a large company, chances are there is already a Health and Fitness Program in place.  You can find out if there is one offered from your Human Resource Department.  Many smaller companies do offer these programs as well; discuss with other employees and your employer whether it is something that your workplace should offer.
