Yoga in Saskatoon, Have You Tried Fitness Focus

posted by Fitness Focus    |   September 9, 2012 23:17
Have you tried Yoga at Fitness Focus?  We encourage all experienced or beginners to come check out our Yoga classes.  No need to book a spot, our studio is large enouge to accommodate classes up to 25 people at a time. Check our Group Fitness Schedule for class times.

You know that yoga is good for you, but here are some benefits and information about Yoga you may not know!

Physical Benefits

Flexibility: Stretching your body in new and different ways will help your joints and muscles to become more flexible, giving you better range of motion. Over time, you will gain flexibility in your legs, back, shoulders, and midsection which can all prevent injury and aid in your resistance training.

Strength: Many poses in yoga require supporting the weight of your own body in new and different ways, including balancing on one leg or supporting yourself with your arms. The slow movements through the poses also develope strength.  You can also expect to see improved muscle tone, better shape and long lean muscles.

Pain Prevention: Increasing flexibility and strength will help prevent certain types of body pain. For example, many people who suffer from back pain can usually trace it back to spending much of their time sitting or high impact activity all day. That can cause spinal compression, which you can begin to address with yoga. Yoga will also improve your alignment, both in and out of class, which helps prevent many other types of pain.

Better Breathing: Most of us breathe very shallowly into the lungs and don't give much thought to how we breathe. Yoga breathing exercises, called Pranayama, focus the attention on the breath and teach us how to better use our lungs, which benefits the entire body. Certain types of breath can also help clear the nasal passages and even calm the central nervous system, which has both physical and mental benefits.

Mental Benefits

Mental Calmness: Yoga asana practice is intensely physical. Concentrating so intently on what your body is doing has the effect of bringing a calmness to the mind. Yoga also introduces you to meditation techniques, such as watching how you breathe and disengagement from your thoughts, which help calm the mind.

Stress Reduction

: Physical activity is a great method for eliminating stress; this is particularly true in yoga.  Yoga provides a much-needed break from the stressors in your life, as well as helping put things into perspective.  The emphasis yoga places on being in the moment can also help relieve stress, as you learn not to dwell on past events or anticipate the future. You will leave a yoga class feeling less stressed than when you started.

Body Awareness: Doing yoga will give you an increased awareness of your own body. You are often called upon to make small, subtle movements to improve your alignment. Over time, this will increase your level of comfort in your own body. This can lead to improved posture and greater self-confidence.

Can you imagine having Multiple Sclerosis? Multiple Sclerosis means that one morning you may not be able to walk when you wake up? Or that you may suddenly have impaired vision. Or that your memory will fail you for no apparent reason. The symptoms of MS are many and vary for everyone. It's estimated that approximately 55,000-75,000 men and women in Canada have the disease, and every day about three more people are diagnosed.

About the MS Bike Tour

You can be a dedicated cyclist or just looking for a bit of recreation, pedaling in the MS Bike Tours means you will be a part of an extraordinary group of Canadians who are getting outside to raise money in the fight against MS. The MS Bike Tour is a pledge-based fundraising event that provides Canadians with the opportunity to ride through scenic and often spectacular parts of the country. Over 10,000 cyclists are expected to participate in the 22 one-day and two-day tours taking place across Canada between June and September.

It has been a critical part of the MS Society’s fundraising efforts for over 20 years and proceeds from this event fund innovative programs and services and support ground breaking research dedicated to finding a cure.

Having multiple sclerosis means that one morning you may not be able to walk when you wake up. Or that you may suddenly have impaired vision. Or that your memory will fail you for no apparent reason. Investing In Your Health

posted by Fitness Focus    |   October 29, 2011 21:07

It’s vital that you make every minute count when you are at the gym; we're talking about your health!  And it seems as though the older we get, the more responsibilities arise and the less time is remaining at the end of the day to focus on your health and wellness.  So, naturally you want to waste as little time possible sitting at a plateau or lost and confused about the proper steps to take towards achieving your health and wellness potential.

Training components such as Bootcamp Intervals or Circuit Training offer a more diverse challenge in the workout and higher intensities allowing you to shatter plateaus or psychological barriers that are holding you back. Training in a group can create a more dynamic workout. It allows for a fun environment with a chance to meet new people with the same goals as you, it's also a great opportunity to learn different exercises and training methods under guidance of your instructor or trainer.

Weather you are a member or not and have yet to try a group fitness class please contact us about a free trial of the Group Fitness Schedule

Group Fitness Over The Summer

posted by Fitness Focus    |   June 7, 2011 16:27

Just because it's finally nice outside doesn't mean it's time to let go of all the progess you've made from Fall through Spring.  The Group Fitness Studio is still packed with a great class lineup, so when fall rolls around again you don't have to be "that person" wishing you hadn't traded all your workouts for a patio during the summer.

It may take a little extra motivation to make that trip to the gym over the summer when you are trying to take advantade of every minute of sun we get.  Keeping your focus will result in the difference between reaching and maintaining your goals in the gym and in your overall fitness, versus starting from the bottom when the weather turns cold and you decide you've taken enough steps in the opposite direction.

Everyone gets busy during the summer months, but don't lose sight of the importance of getting at least 30 minutes of exercise per day.

Zumba, Spin, Boxercise Tabata, MetCon and much more; see The Aerobics Schedule for classes and times!
